SIGFOX And MAREN – It Takes Two To Tango

When we talk about the Internet of Things (IoT), we are not going to get away from the fact that we also have to talk about sensors and connectivity too. In order for an IoT device to carry out a certain command, it needs information first. Information that will be caught by the components responsible to collect data about motion, luminosity, humidity or temperature for instance. In one of our earlier blogs we introduced you our sensor hub platform MAREN already. In this article we want to focus on its SIGFOX connectivity opportunity.

MAREN – A True All-Rounder In Terms Of Sensing And Connectivity

Besides its capabilities in sensor technology, MAREN is designed to have various connectivity opportunities as well. A Broadcom Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module and an NXP dual interface NFC memory are proposed by default. With the Atmel XPLAINED PRO interface you are able to add many wireless connectivity expansions to the board. Among them are Wi-Fi modules but also SIGFOX connectivity. And we want especially put the spot on the latter mentioned technology, which is on the way to revolutionize the Internet of Things.

Communication Solution Dedicated To The Internet Of Things

SIGFOX is the world’s leading provider of global communications service for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is a LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area) network that can be used for bi-directional communication in many application: Industry 4.0, logistics, smart agriculture, smart cities or fitness and healthcare applications. Relying on Ultra-Narrow Band (UNB) modulation, SIGFOX offers a great resistance to jamming and standard interferers. In open country distances between 30 and 50 kilometres are bridgeable, in cities between 3 and 10 km. In Europe SIGFOX operates on 868 MHz, which allows it to have a wider reach than alternative technologies based on 2.4 GHz.

SIGFOX On The Global Advance

At the moment the SIGFOX network has been rolled-out in Western Europe – France, Portugal, Spain The Netherlands and Ireland – already. Germany, as the fourth biggest economy in the world, is about to follow with a nationwide commissioning by the end of 2017. But SIGFOX is also on the rise globally. In May, the company announced that the city that never sleeps – New York – is IoT connected. Meanwhile a general roll-out in the United States is on the run. It looks like that the victory march cannot be stopped.

Connect With MAREN To The SIGFOX Cloud

Our reference design platform for IoT applications offers with the SIGFOX expansion an excellent solutions for the companies, start-ups and the maker-community to develop their IoT devices. Due to MAREN’s excellent technical features in terms of sensing and connectivity almost every thinkable design possibility for IoT applications can be tackled. EBV also offers a special edition of the MAREN monitor, which is able to support the SIGFOX cloud interaction and provides an end to end SIGFOX demonstration platform (from device to cloud).

More information about the EBV sensor hub platform for your IoT application can be found on our website. In the media section there is also the possibility to download the latest version of the MAREN monitor SIGFOX Edition. Everything you need to get started with your IoT project in one place!
