When Erich Fischer founded EBV Elektronik in 1969 he was certainly not aware of the term „start-up“, although its distributor of electronic components was such a company at that time. The term became internationally widespread during the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, when a great number of Internet-based companies were founded. Today there are uncountable newly emerged, fast-growing businesses on the market.
Start-up companies can often be found in technology realms, such as Internet, e-commerce, computers, telecommunications, or robotics. But those small businesses, which are designed to quickly develop scalable business models, are active in many more sectors nowadays. We at EBV with our manifold experience in many segments identified the great potential of the start-up market and created a campaign to support upcoming companies in many fields: EBV StartMeUp.
EBV Campaign Kickstarts Businesses
Bernd Pfeil, Vice President Sales Central Europe, just recently revealed in an interview with Elektronik.net (in German) that it is hard to further grow in existing markets with EBV’s market share of almost 30% in Central Europe. According to him, that’s why EBV needs to follow new paths in order to access new markets and target groups.
As a leading company in semiconductor distribution we for sure concentrate on start-ups in the technology sector, but also electronic newcomers are an interesting target group. The latter are often well established enterprises, investing in new areas like for instance wearable technology. With it’s long-lasting know-how EBV consults not only in finding the appropriate electronic components, but also to provide start-up companies with a huge network of business partners.
StartMeUP on Tour
Because our StartMeUp initiative is still very fresh, we are on the road to promote it. There are events and conferences, we are also present at. A couple of weeks ago our team took part at an event in the German hot spot for start-ups Berlin. The “Lange Nacht der Start-ups” gathered not only start-ups, but also investors, established technology companies and start-up accelerators. We were present as well in the beginning of September in order to introduce ourselves and to explain how we can act as facilitator.
During the last two days, the Bavarian metropolis Munich was the place to be for the start-up scene again. In 2013 the founders of Bits & Pretzels initiated a start-up festival, which constantly grew during the past years. The event is known in the start-up scene for its top-notch speakers, highlights were certainly the opening speech by Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey and the interview with Sir Richard Branson. Besides that, a Start-up Academy, workshops and networking opportunities were oppfered to help young businesses to be successful. Furthermore, the Pitch Area was reserved for aspiring entrepreneurs to introduce their ideas and business concepts to venture capitalists. The EBV StartMeUp booth was located right in the middle of the foyer, and a lot of interested people kept our team busy explaining our competencies and the opportunities for businesses when collaborating with EBV.
EBV’s Offer to Help Start-ups
But how does the support looks like EBV is offering for start-ups? Rather than offering financial funding, EBV provides comprehensive technical help, especially as far as sampling and designing is concerned. Furthermore, we can provide state-of-the-art logistics services and reference designs. As already mentioned above, EBV is able to support start-ups with its broad network of partners, like manufacturing companies or research institutes. StartMeUp is an EMEA wide campaign and consequently dedicated support will be offered for start-ups.
To put it in a nutshell, EBV is investing in resources and provides high-end specialists in order to support entrepreneurs and is therefore taking risks as well. But to say it with the words of the Bits & Pretzels opening keynote speaker, Kevin Spacey: “It’s the risktakers, who are awarded.” Not least because of that, we believe that we are the right partner for start-ups to get their business off the ground. And there are already success stories that prove us right.
