SoCrates II Development Board With Altera Cyclone V SoC
The core device of the board is an Altera Cyclone V SoC device with an 800 MHz Dual Core ARM® Cortex®-A9 processor. SoCrates II has a customisable FPGA area offering enough space to implement a variety of different peripherals and now comes with high speed connectivity features.
While the processor is a limiting factor you can get a lot of power out of the possible hardware acceleration of the software. This can be done in 2 ways: one way is the well known classic FPGA-design, which usually requires much FPGA-knowledge. A different and increasingly applied course is using a software-approach mainly known so far from high performance computing: OpenCL. The C-like Open Computing Language allows for easy parallelisation of code and offloading the CPU. It does not require specific hardware knowledge and with the OpenCL board support package for SoCrates II compute kernels automatically translate into acceleration hardware.
