The Best SoCs We’ve Ever Seen To Cut Down Time-To-Market

Designing new products isn’t always fun. There is a lot of pressure on hardware designers these days as development cycles are required to get shorter and shorter, software development adds to complexity and cost pressure is killing the last spark of joy when investigating new ideas.

Sounds familiar? Well, then you’ll love Avnet’s ready-made SoC modules that will give you freedom and time to focus on your ideas and visions! Designing with these System-On-Modules (SOM) and Single-Board Computer (SBC) solutions for the Xilinx Zynq®-7000 and Zynq UltraScale+ All Programmable SoC can result in faster, less costly, and lower risk compared to designing from the beginning.
Avnet’s SoM can reduce development times by more than four months, allowing you to focus your efforts on adding differentiating features and unique capabilities. Check out some of the ultra-useful benefits you can get from our SoMs below.

Avnet SoMs – How do they work?

The concept is as easy as clever. Looking at typical SoC designs, we recognized that the processing system side (PS side) is usually supported by standard peripherals and interfaces and the programmable logic side (PL side) is connected to own application-specific circuits. In addition, a power solution is added.

In our System-On-Modules approach, we take the things from the PS side and add them to the PCB. Furthermore, we route the PL I/O to user connectors and add some of the Zynq-specific power circuits as well.

Comparing SoM vs. Chip-Down Solution

By using the SoM developers can simply add it to their own PCB (which we refer to as carrier card in this case) and complement it with the user application circuits, just as you would in a chip-down design. Alternatively, there are also varieties of Avnet carrier cards available that offer many pre-configured features.
The design is then finished with a power solution, which in this case will be simplified since the Zynq-specific power is already taken care of on the Zynq SoM.

The simple steps above show the huge potential to save development time and effort. However, there is a bunch of more good news, since the SoM approach offers additional advantages. The SoM means using a pre-tested piece of hardware, which is providing reliability. Thanks to the broad spectrum of example designs, tutorials, and board support packages you can get running quickly. EBV and Avnet support is incredibly comprehensive because we have a vast amount of experience with these SoM devices.

The benefits are also important when we look at software development, which is greatly simplified through early access to working hardware so you can start running code and debugging it immediately. In addition, a working board support package (BSP) gives you the essentials of a working OS or RTOS. Avnet also provides example designs and applications that can help you to jump-start coding efforts.
Moreover, as you are working within the given architecture of the SoM processing system, it is much easier for our FAEs and specialists to offer you deep customer support and debugging assistance.
