Avnet SoMs – How do they work?
The concept is as easy as clever. Looking at typical SoC designs, we recognized that the processing system side (PS side) is usually supported by standard peripherals and interfaces and the programmable logic side (PL side) is connected to own application-specific circuits. In addition, a power solution is added.
In our System-On-Modules approach, we take the things from the PS side and add them to the PCB. Furthermore, we route the PL I/O to user connectors and add some of the Zynq-specific power circuits as well.
Comparing SoM vs. Chip-Down Solution
By using the SoM developers can simply add it to their own PCB (which we refer to as carrier card in this case) and complement it with the user application circuits, just as you would in a chip-down design. Alternatively, there are also varieties of Avnet carrier cards available that offer many pre-configured features.
The design is then finished with a power solution, which in this case will be simplified since the Zynq-specific power is already taken care of on the Zynq SoM.
